These Coir mats encourage revegetation, increase the retention of moisture and have minimal environmental impact.
Revegetation: They stabilise the soil and give plants the time they need to establish. Coir mats are better for tube stock than seeds, because of their thickness (they would cover the seeds), but they can be easily placed around the plants. This allows you to grow plants on steep slopes that would normally struggle to establish in such an environment, simply because of the lack of soil stability. These mats also help to solve weed problems.
Moisture retention: Loss of soil on steep slopes also leads to loss of moisture, preventing revegetation. A coir mat helps the soil to retain this essential moisture, giving your tube stock time to grow. This is achieved because the mat not only covers the soil and prevents moisture loss, but also because the coconut fibres absorb moisture and keep it close to the ground.
Minimal environmental impact: Since the coir mat is made from 100% organic coconut fibre it’s also 100% biodegradable and adds organic fibre to the soil as it degrades (it takes up to three years to degrade). This means that the organic coir mats are very good for the soil!
